Fatal Jefferson Park Garage Fire Involves Fireworks and Explosions
Los Angeles – Early Saturday morning, May 9, 2026, the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a structure fire in the Jefferson Park neighborhood after 911 callers reported a garage on fire with explosions and fireworks going off.
The first 911 call was received at 5:35 AM for a fire near 2421 South 9th Avenue. Firefighters were dispatched at 5:36 AM and arrived at 5:40 AM to find a detached garage fully involved with fire. Due to the active explosions and fireworks, crews initially fought the fire from a safe distance while working to protect nearby homes.
At approximately 5:45 AM, firefighters declared an emergency message over the radio because multiple fireworks were still going off and a nearby residential building was exposed to the fire. Despite the hazardous conditions, firefighters were able to bring the main body of fire under control at 5:52 AM.
The fire destroyed a detached garage with an attached accessory dwelling unit. After the fire was extinguished, officials learned that one adult male had been living in the accessory dwelling unit. He was later found deceased at the scene.
Four adults who were inside the front single-family home at the time of the fire were accounted for. No evacuations were ordered.
Two adults from a neighboring home, one male and one female, were transported to the hospital after suffering multiple animal bites while attempting to retrieve their dogs.
Because of the explosions, fireworks, and reports of a possible missing person, LAFD requested arson investigators, search dogs, a Public Information Officer, and additional city resources. Search dogs were used to help confirm whether anyone else was inside the burned structure.
The Los Angeles Police Department Bomb Squad also responded to remove approximately 618 pounds of fireworks from the property. LAPD Major Crimes and arson investigators are handling the investigation.
One adult female was displaced by the fire, and the American Red Cross was requested to assist with shelter. One LAFD “Save” card was also issued.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
