Recognizing the Lifeline of Compassion: The LAFD Chaplain Corps

Monday, December 16, 2024

On Tuesday, December 17, 2024 at the LAFD Board of Fire Commissioners meeting, Fire Chief Kristin Crowley provided special recognition for the LAFD Chaplain Corps and the Los Angeles Firemen’s Relief Association which provides the financial support to maintain the Corps.

"Serving those who serve" is more than just a motto; it's a calling that defines the LAFD Chaplain Corps. In the most difficult moments, when the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) is faced with disaster and crisis, the chaplains are there—offering comfort, support, and unwavering dedication to those who serve. They are our first responders in times of emotional and physical turmoil, and their impact is immeasurable.

Since 1941, the LAFD Chaplains have stood as steadfast pillars of support, offering guidance to active and retired members, their families, and the community. For over eight decades, this corps has been a unique and integral part of the Department’s behavioral health and wellness efforts, providing round-the-clock care during both the darkest and most joyous moments.

The role of a chaplain is vast and varied. They are there in the aftermath of the most harrowing situations—whether it’s offering solace at the bedside of an injured firefighter, checking in on members who have been off-duty, or providing essential supplies and emotional support to grieving families. These compassionate individuals have even answered the call in national crises, like the aftermath of the September 11 attacks, to stand by their fellow first responders. However, Chaplains don’t only serve in times of crisis. They also stand beside us during life’s most joyful moments - births, graduations, promotions, weddings, anniversaries and retirements -serving as a presence during all seasons of life.

What makes the LAFD Chaplain Corps truly distinctive is the fact that all chaplains are current or former LAFD members. These are seasoned firefighters, who understand firsthand the unique challenges and dangers of the profession. They don’t just offer spiritual support—they fight fires, pull hoses, throw ladders, and perform medical duties, just like their fellow firefighters. This shared experience enables chaplains to connect in a deeply personal way, empathizing with the stresses, risks, and triumphs that come with being a first responder. They also provide crucial support to the civilian staff who play such a vital role in the department's success.
Becoming an LAFD Chaplain is no small feat. Each candidate must undergo a rigorous vetting process, gaining approval from the Fire Chief and endorsement from their faith communities. Once appointed by the Board of Fire Commissioners, they are expected to embody the highest standards of integrity, character, and professionalism.

Currently, three active chaplains serve the Department, with three retired and two in training. The training process is comprehensive, often taking up to a year, and requires new chaplains to shadow experienced members and complete a detailed "Task Book." The emotional toll of the job is great, and chaplains often find themselves offering support during incredibly difficult times—injuries, illnesses, loss, and the emotional challenges of the job. Yet our chaplains stand with the fallen, cheer for the hurting, celebrate courage, and admire the selfless acts of others.

The “ministry of presence” is the essence of the chaplains’ work: just being there. Whether in times of crisis or celebration, chaplains may not always have the right words to say, but their presence offers comfort and solace. They help ease burdens, bring peace during trying times, and celebrate life’s milestones with grace and compassion. Their work is a quiet, yet essential force within the LAFD, touching the lives of everyone they serve.

On behalf of the Los Angeles Fire Department, we extend our deepest gratitude to all of our Chaplains. Your selfless dedication, boundless compassion, and unwavering support make you an invaluable part of our department. Thank you for being there when we need you most—whether in times of hardship or in moments of joy. You are a beacon of hope, and we are forever grateful for your service.
