PORTOLA FIRE
FINAL UPDATE: THIS IS THE FINAL UPDATE PROVIDED FOR THE PORTOLA FIRE (Wildfire) NEAR BEVERLY CREST / BENEDICT CANYON
Last Updated: 5:45 PM, Thursday, June 14, 2018.
Evacuation Orders: All evacuations were lifted at 8PM Tuesday night and all residents were permitted to re-house at that time.
Injuries: No civilian injuries. Two adult male LA County FD firefighters were transported for medical care: one with heat exertion and one with a minor burn injury.
Damage: No homes have been damaged.
Size: Final estimate is over 30 acres.
Containment: 95%
Resources Assigned: By this evening (14 June) the LAFD Incident Magement Team will transfer command to our local fire companies and deactivate the command post.
Fire Cause: The fire was determined to be caused by a vegetation trimming device ("weed wacker") being used for brush clearance in the 9800 block of Portola Drive.
Safety Message: The cause of this fire serves as a strong reminder for all residents to use only licensed contractors (list here) who are bound by safety guidelines and requirements, including no use of metal blade trimmers and the maintainance of extinguishing agent at hand. The LAFD reminds you that exhaust manifolds of fuel powered trimmers can get very hot, and that is likely the direct cause of this fire.
