One Man Killed in Sylmar Motel Room Fire
SYLMAR - Firefighters contained the structure fire to a single motel unit, but one man was beyond medical help.
At 6:16 AM on the morning of Friday, February 25, 2022, a 9-1-1 call alerted LAFD to a structure fire on the 12200 block of North San Fernando Road. Firefighters arrived quickly and found fire blowing out of the window and door of one unit of a one-story L-shaped garden-style motel. Firefighters assigned to fire attack deployed hose lines, whicle others made their way to the roof to cut holes and relieve the fire unit of excessive heat, smoke, and toxic gases. As flames reached out of the front of the motel room, licking the eve line, firefighters coordinated their chainsaws and hose lines for a coordinated and rapid extinguishment effort, which took just 12 minutes from the first ring of the 9-1-1 call. Ultimately, 22 LAFD firefighters contained the fire to the unit of origin, saving 17 other adjoined motel rooms.
Tragically, one adult male was found dead, and beyond medical help, inside the small 10’ x 10’ burnt out motel room. No one else was injured during the incident. LA Coroner will remove the body in a dignified manner. There was no immediate evidence of a functional smoke alarm. LAFD Fire Investigators, along with LAPD, are actively performing a thorough investigation to determine exactly what sparked the blaze.
