LAFD Extinguishes Two-Story Apartment Fire in Sherman Oaks
LOS ANGELES — Approximately 80 firefighters achieved full extinguishment of a fire in a two-story garden style apartment building today after a battle lasting 2 hours and 34 minutes.
On Thursday, May 21, 2026, at 8:54 AM, the first arriving LAFD companies reported heavy fire showing from a second-floor unit and immediately initiated an offensive attack while coordinating evacuations and roof ventilation.
The fire was successfully confined to the primary unit on the second floor, though several adjacent units sustained significant smoke and water damage. In total, seven apartments were impacted by the incident, with three deemed uninhabitable by LA Building and Safety. The Red Cross is currently on scene assisting eight adults and one child who have been displaced.
Two patients were transported to local hospitals: a 69-year-old female in moderate condition being treated for shortness of breath, and an adult male of unknown disposition. Remarkably, firefighters also rescued two dogs from the affected unit. The dogs were provided first aid on scene before being reunited with their owner for transport to a veterinarian.
No injuries were reported among fire department personnel. While the fire has been extinguished, LAFD companies remain on scene for extensive overhaul procedures, and LAFD Arson investigators are working to determine the cause of the blaze.
