Apparatus Operator


Duties of an Apparatus Operator

  • Driving the apparatus and operating aerial ladders and small capacity pumps
  • Assisting in firefighting tasks when the apparatus is not used
  • Performing preventative maintenance of apparatus and equipment
  • Conducting fire prevention activities
  • Instructing station members in various subjects, including; hydraulics, theory, and operation of the apparatus

Requirements to test for the position of Apparatus Operator

  • Completion of three years of full-time paid fire suppression certified experience in the City of Los Angeles Fire Department

And

  • A valid California Commercial Class B driver’s license with either the Tank vehicles transporting hazardous materials or wastes endorsement (X) or the Firefighter Endorsement (RSTR 50);

Or

  • A valid out-of-state commercial driver’s license (comparable to California Class B) with endorsements  to either the California Tank vehicles transporting hazardous materials or wastes endorsement (X) or the California Firefighter Endorsement (RSTR 50) and an LAFD approved letter (F-225)

    • Pass/Fail
    • The interview is conducted to determine the candidate's position within their respective band and their preparation for the position of the Apparatus Operator ​​
  • CORE Training
    • Reviews the various components of being an Apparatus Operator
    • Final step for the member who is going to be promoted to Apparatus Operator
