Sunland House Fire Claims a Life
On the morning of September 14, 2018, the Los Angeles Fire Department was notified at 4:15 AM of a structure fire in the 8500 block of West Wyngate Street in Sunland. Firefighters were notified of an occupant inside when they arrived to find heavy flames in the front portion of the one-story home.
A 51 year-old female resident was awakened by the heavy smoke and grabbed her cell phone to call 9-1-1. She alerted firefighters that her 52 year-old male housemate was still inside the home but as firefighters aggressively extinguished the flames and searched for the man, he was found deceased.
The woman was treated for minor smoke inhalation on-scene but declined transportation to a local hospital. During this time, 35 LAFD Firefighters continued the aggressive fire attack and coordinated vertical ventilation to extinguish the flames in just 21 minutes.
The home was found to have smoke alarms however the functional status is unknown. The cause of death will be determined by the Los Angeles County Coroner. The cause of the fire is under active investigation by the LAFD Arson/ Counter- Terrorism Section.
