Small Plane Crashes in Van Nuys, Killing Two
The Los Angeles City Fire Department responded to a small plane that crashed on the runway, burst into flames, and killed two occupants on board.
Your LAFD responded to the gate near the 16300 block of West Waterman Drive at 10:37 AM on August 2, 2023, where a small fixed-wing single-engine airplane crashed on the airfield. LAFD Fire Station 114 is located at Van Nuys airport, just one-quarter mile from the site of the crash. Crews arrived on scene just one minute after dispatch, and extinguished the flames just two minutes after that, using firefighting foam that forms a layer (or "blanket") on top to prevent oxygen from feeding the flames, and is particularly effective on fires involving flammable liquids (like aviation gasoline).
After firefighters extinguished the intense flames consuming the aircraft, they found two occupants on board that were, sadly, beyond medical assistance. LAFD remained on scene assisting NTSB, LAWA PD and the Medical Examiner during their investigation.
