At 1:14 PM on January 9, 2015, LAFD arrived to find a single-engine Lancair 320 had crashed in a busy commercial intersection near Van Nuys Airport.

Firefighters rapidly a assessed the scene and determined there was only one occupant on board the aircraft, an adult male who sadly was determined dead on scene. No one else was injured. Fortunately, the plane did not hit any vehicles, or structures, and did not catch fire.

Firefighters worked with police officers to rapidly shut down the intersection and fire engines remained in place for fire protection while fuel was being diked and cleaned up.

The cause of the crash is under active investigation by the NTSB who is taking the lead, along with the FAA, LAPD, and LAFD. A positive identification of the deceased male, as well as the cause, time and manner of his death will be determined by the Coroner's Office.
