Firefighters Prevent Blaze from Consuming Neighborhood
With winds blowing, a fully involved dwelling under construction threatened to consume homes surrounding it on three sides.
At 5:45AM on December 1, 2023 the Los Angeles City Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire in the 1100 block of N Berendo St in East Hollywood.
Firefighters arrived to find a one story, single family dwelling in the framing stages, well involved in fire and threatening buildings on three sides.
With additional resources enroute, firefighters immediately initiated both a defensive operation on the fully involved structure and an offensive operation on the exposed buildings. The intense heat combined with the wind conditions allowed the fire to extend into a duplex on the North side. Crews fought aggressively and while the duplex sustained significant damage, all other exposed buildings were defended.
60 firefighters, operating under the command of Battalion Chief Gregg Avery, extinguished both fires in 28 minutes with no injuries reported.
The cause is under investigation.
