Downtown Structure Fire with Partial Floor Collapse

Friday, December 1, 2023
LOS ANGELES-

While engaged in fire attack on the 2nd floor, two firefighters 'rode' a partial floor collapse down onto the 1st floor and thankfully did not sustain any serious injuries.

At 1:00AM on December 1, 2023 the Los Angeles City Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire in the 1000 block of W Sunset Blvd in Downtown Los Angeles. The first arriving fire company found an outside fire extending into a two story commercial building. They immediately initiated an offensive operation and requested additional resources.

While crews gained access to the structure and deployed hand lines, they found fire on both the 1st and 2nd floors. The engine and truck companies executed a well coordinated interior fire attack and vertical ventilation operation.

During the firefight, a portion of the floor in one room on the 2nd story collapsed and two firefighters 'rode' the section gradually down onto the 1st floor. Fortunately they did not sustain any serious injuries and were later transported to the hospital for a full evaluation.

The 51 year old, 7,406 sq foot building housed medical offices. 68 firefighters, operating under the command of Assistant Chief Steve Hissong, fully extinguished the fire in 58 minutes.

Per protocol, LAFD Arson and Counter-Terrorism Section (ACTS) responded and are conducting an active investigation into the cause of the fire.
