A Bright Spot in the Sadness

Thursday, December 22, 2022

While dealing with the devastating loss of their home, the Mendoza families were able to smile and laugh for a few precious moments as Your LAFD firefighters delivered toys so graciously donated via the Spark of Love program.

Tragedy struck in the early morning hours of December 19th, when an electrical issue sparked a fire in their Canoga Park home. With fire showing upon the arrival of the first company, crews immediately initiated an aggressive interior fire attack and vertical ventilation operation on the roof.  Despite their intense efforts, the blaze consumed the interior and extended up into the attic of the home.

With only the walls left standing, the two families sharing the home stood outside consoling their children.

The firefighters of Station 72, serving Canoga Park, could not just carry on with the rest of their day once the incident was complete.

They began formulating a plan.

Santa made a special delivery from Toy Central to Fire Station 72 and the crew went to work assembling bikes and sorting out the toys.

The plan came together and smiles were achieved when Fire Station 72 welcomed the Mendoza families with their Santa Surprise.

The firefighters of Station 72 then provided a full tour and the families climbed inside the fire engine and learned about the tools carried in all the compartments. In other words, a full inspection of "Santa's Sleigh".

The Mendoza families have a difficult road ahead, rebuilding their lives but we're so relieved no one was injured and their spirit endures the hardship.  We were honored to spend this time with them.

Providing this small spot of brightness during difficult times via the Spark of Love program is only possible because of the countless donations made by generous residents across the City of Los Angeles. Your LAFD is eternally grateful for the support provided every single year.

We thank you.
