Beverly Crest Mudslide Temporarily Closes Mulholland Drive

Tuesday, February 28, 2023
BEVERLY CREST-

Los Angeles City Firefighters responded to the Beverly Crest area on Tuesday to evacuate an unharmed elderly man and his caretaker, after a resident reported a hillside debris flow.

The Los Angeles Fire Department's neighborhood fire station received a phone call from the local community's security gate around 8:30 AM on February 28, 2023, reporting  a large amount of soil sliding across Mulholland Drive. Firefighters arrived quickly and called for additional assistance, after determining that portions of the steep hillside behind a home had given way, sliding approximately 50 feet downhill into a power pole and onto Mulholland Drive. Fortunately, there were no injuries or entrapment, and the power remained on.

Firefighters evaluated four homes in the area, but only one was of any concern. As a precaution, one elderly male resident and his caretaker were calmly evacuated from the premises, and temporarily stayed with a neighbor. The home of concern was yellow-tagged for limited access by the City's Department of Building and Safety, precluding anyone from entering the backyard, but allowing residents back into the home.

Over 75 firefighters at the peak of the incident, under the command of Battalion Chief William Peralta, ensured the safety of residents and passersby. Mulholland Drive will be closed between Beverly Park (on the east) and Deep Canyon Drive (on the west) until after the next rain storm passes. The appropriate L.A. City agencies continue to actively assess the area. Homes below the unstable hillside are several hundred feet away, and are not threatened by this event.

Firefighters remind you to always have an emergency kit and a well-practiced escape plan at-the-ready for a variety of unforeseen emergencies throughout the year, not just for brush fires.
