Update Structure Fire KNOCKDOWN 03/17/2019 INC#1246

Update KNOCKDOWN Structure Fire; INC#1246; 05:17PM; 5460 N White Oak Av; http://bit.ly/2OaGhfL; Encino; 71 firefighters extinguished a fire in a 4-story apartment building (3 residential floors over 1 parking) in 68 minutes. Initially, firefighters found lazy smoke and traced it to a microwave in a unit, which was out upon arrival. Members outside observed no change in smoke coming from the rear of the building. Further investigation revealed fire in the attic above multiple units. Additional units were added and companies began making access through the ceiling to access the fire. In the process of extinguishing the fire, multiple units were damaged by flames and smoke, causing tenants and their pets to become displaced. Unknown number of units/residents/animals to be displaced. Red Cross is responding to assist these families during this time. No civilian or firefighter injuries. Update Structure Fire KNOCKDOWN 03/17/2019 INC#1254

Update KNOCKDOWN Structure Fire; INC#1254; 05:21PM; 13736 W Desmond St; http://bit.ly/2Y424dB; Pacoima; 68 firefighters extinguished a fire at a welding shop attached to a 1-story U-shaped commercial building in just 19 minutes. The welding shop was operating in an area that was added onto the exterior of the building under a corrugated metal roof. Firefighters encountered heavy smoke and fire after making entry. An aggressive interior fire fight revealed a mezzanine in the back that was fully involved. The fire was rapidly extinguished and all nearby buildings and properties were protected. Fire did not extend inside the commercial building or into the adjacent bus yard. The unit was unoccupied at the time of the fire. No injuries. Update Gasoline Explosion KNOCKDOWN 03/17/2019 INC#0414

Update KNOCKDOWN Gasoline Explosion; INC#0414; 07:45AM; 216 W Slauson Av; http://bit.ly/2Y2NRO5; Florence; Firefighters responded to a call for a smell of gas in the air. Companies arrived on scene to find a 9000-gallon gasoline tanker that was leaking. The fumes came into contact with an unknown ignition source and exploded into flames, forcing firefighters back and exposing nearby structures to flame impingement. 72 firefighters extinguished the blaze in 1 hour and 53 minutes. A two-story single-family home was damaged by fire and one family was displaced from their home. A man-hole cover(s) was displaced when fumes in the storm drain ignited and created underground pressure. Two civilian patients were transported to a local hospital with unknown injuries. Arson Investigators are on scene to determine cause. LAFD Hazardous Materials specialists are on scene to mitigate environmental impact and maintain safety for crews still working near the incident. The fuel type was initially reported to be natural gas, but has now been determined to be gasoline. Unknown cause/loss. No reported firefighter injuries. Update Natural Gas Leak 03/17/2019 INC#0414

Update Natural Gas Leak; INC#0414; 07:45AM; 216 W Slauson Av; http://bit.ly/2Y2NRO5; Florence; A 9000-gallon tanker that was leaking gasoline caught fire, exposing 2 structures to flames and igniting the atmosphere in the storm drains. 72 firefighters have been battling the blaze for an hour and a half and there is currently no active fire. Man hole covers were displaced by underground pressure. Two patients have been transported to a local hospital with unknown injuries. DWP, Building and Safety, and the gas company have all been notified. LAFD Hazmat Squad 21 is on scene to mitigate the environmental impact and maintain safety for crews still working on scene.
