The unit on the 3rd floor was under construction (pipe sweating operation) and the fire extended into the pipe alley. Firefighters opened the walls to chase down the fire and confirm the path of travel did not extend up into the attic. He is declining transport to the hospital. The helicopter will land and transfer care to the firefighter/paramedics. The 9-1-1 call was received at 2:30PM. There were no persons exposed to the mercury. Out of an abundance of caution, the building is being evacuated to ensure the HVAC system does not created a hazard. There are no medical complaints at this time. The fire destroyed the unit of origin and the extent of damage to the adjacent units is being determined. The exposed mobile home / RVs were defended from damage. LAFD Arson section is responding for the investigation. Traffic will remain heavily impacted on Balboa from Stagg to Saticoy due to hose lines and apparatus. Please continue to avoid the area.
