Five patients total (undetermined age / gender / affiliation / circumstances). Undetermined if any were trapped. Four of the patients have serious injuries and will be taken to area hospitals. Fire was held to the unit of origin, with adjacent units and floors above successfully protected from fire impingement. Knockdown declared in 26 minutes with 44 firefighters on scene. Traffic will be affected and handled by LADOT while companies overhaul damage and clear smoke from the building. LAFD PIO en route -- media staging at Elm x Whitworth. Update KNOCKDOWN Structure Fire; INC#0297; 04:33AM; 16208 S Vermont Av; https://bit.ly/3HjRrPq; Harbor Gateway; KNOCKDOWN at the "Major Emergency" fire known as Vermont IC. It took the combined effort of 144 firefighters 5 hours (300 minutes) in defensive mode to contain the complex fire and mitigate various safety considerations. Multiple LAFD units, including Hazmat, will remain on scene to monitor and control any fire or life safety hazards due to the large amount of lead-acid batteries burning at this commercial occupancy. The fire is under active investigation. The primary goal is to keep the fire confined to the building of origin. LAFD Hazmat specialists are currently monitoring air quality and water runoff to ensure safe operating conditions. DWP is on scene working to de-energize the structure for additional safety.
