Update Natural Gas Leak; INC#1254; 09:50PM; 712 S Westlake Av; http://bit.ly/2CQXIhw; Westlake; LAFD HazMat experts continue to work closely with SoCalGas to determine the source and soil boundaries of flammable (natural?) gas that appears to be centered near an (unk operator) subterranean utility vault in front of 711 S Westlake Ave; To enhance safety during this investigation, LADWP has turned off electricity in the immediate area, including the two closest apartment buildings (totaling 72 units) from which as many as 120 persons have been formally evacuated this evening; Buses are being secured to take evacuees with placement needs from an assembly point at 660 S Alvarado St (Metro Westlake/MacArthur Park Station) to an American Red Cross shelter being established at the Lafayette Recreation Center, 625 S Lafayette Park Place; There have been no injuries; #LATraffic: Full Street Closure to all vehicles/pedestrians now includes: Westlake Avenue between 7th Street and 8th Street, as well as both 7th Street and 8th Street between Alvarado Street and Bonnie Brae Street until LAFD operations complete; Unknown duration; Motorists: expect congestion and delay, avoid area and consider alternate route; Detours readily available, monitor traffic reports on news radio; Bus Riders: Follow @MetroLAAlerts on Twitter for information; FS 11; Batt 11; Central Bureau; Council District 1; Dispatched LAFD Units: BC11 CM22 E11 E13 E15 E20 E21 E210 E211 E220 E221 EM11 RA11 RA20 RA21 RA811 SQ21 T10 T11 T20 T21; Radio Channels: 7; 12, 13; - Brian Humphrey

Update Natural Gas Leak; INC#1254; 07:35PM; 712 S Westlake Av; internal:/; Westlake; LAFD hazmat experts have localized an increase in combustible (natural?) gas in a subterranean utility vault across the street from 712 S Westlake Ave, which also exhibits damage (a small crack) from a possible minor 'explosion' that was widely heard in the area before the first of several 9-1-1 calls. No fire or smoke at that (unk operator) utility vault, which will now be the prime focus of a joint LAFD/LADWP/SoCalGas cause investigation; a three-story 30-unit 17,145 square-foot apartment building (built 1930) at 711 S Westlake Ave is now the focus of a formal evacuation (now totaling 2 buildings, unk total occupants), as it is closest to the utility vault in question; Westlake Ave remains closed to all vehicle and pedestrian traffic between 7th St and 8th St; LAPD and LADOT now assisting with crowd and traffic control; FS 11; Batt 11; Central Bureau; Council District 1; Radio Channels: 7; 12 13; - Brian Humphrey
