SITUATION: Overnight, crews and aircraft worked to contain wind driven spot fires and flare ups within the current fire perimeter. Adverse weather conditions will be the biggest challenge for firefighters today. An Extreme Red Flag Warning remains in effect throughout the day today and into tomorrow. Winds are forecasted to be 30-50 mph with peak wind gusts up to 70 mph. Relative humidity is forecasted to drop into single digits with poor to no overnight recoveries. This all adds up to an extreme fire weather threat, meaning that conditions are as dangerous for fire growth and behavior as we have seen
in recent years.

In anticipation of the extreme Santa Ana wind event the Los Angeles City Fire Department has recalled and staffed additional resources for any emergency that may arise over the next 24 hrs. These resources will be strategically placed in key locations that have a history of being prone to wildfire.

FIRE CAUSE: Investigators have determined the preliminary cause of the fire by using burn patterns, witness statements, and physical evidence. The fire was deemed an accidental start, caused by a tree branch that broke off and subsequently landed in nearby powerlines during high wind conditions. This errant tree branch caused the sparking and arcing of the powerlines, igniting nearby brush. All powerlines on the pole remained intact.

STRUCTURES AFFECTED : 7,091 residences are in the Mandatory Evacuation Zone and considered threatened. 12 residences have been destroyed and 5 residences have been damaged.

MANDATORY EVACUATION: The official Evacuation Map indicates Mandatory Evacuation Zones in RED that remain in effect today. You can search for an address in the upper right corner of the map.

The borders of the Mandatory Evacuation (RED) Zone are:

  • Temescal Canyon Road is the West border
  • Sunset Boulevard is the South border
  • Mulholland Drive is the North border (EXCEPT the Mountaingate community where I.D. is required)
  • 405 Freeway is the East border

EVACUATION UPDATE FROM THE LOS ANGELES POLICE DEPARTMENT:  In order to better assist the communities we serve during these times, we have established the following plan allowing residents to temporarily revisit their homes. The temporary revisit is set with the sole purpose of retrieval of medicines and/or check on their pets.

Escorts for medication retrieval and removal of pets:

  • In order to be escorted, residents must show valid identification with proof of residency and have a need to obtain medication
  • Police Officers must take a photo of that identification
  • Prior to escorting, Police Officers must have a conversation with the resident notifying them if they are escorted to their residence that they cannot stay.
  • Additionally, Police Officers must discuss that escorts are subject to be called off due to unsafe conditions; That determination is made by the Los Angeles Fire Department.
  • There is a time restrictions of 5-10 minutes for residents to gather their medications.
  • Police Officers cannot force residents out if they decide to remain longer but should encourage and seek cooperation if residents attempt to do so

The 3 locations for escorts will be:

Gelson's Parking Lot
15424 Sunset Boulevard
Pacific Palisades, California 90272

United States Post Office
200 South Barrington Avenue

INFORMATION UPDATE: As of 10/29/19 at 4:00 PM PDT New Information Provided is the Cause Determination

CAUSE DETERMINATION (NEW):  Investigators from the Los Angeles Fire Department’s (LAFD) Arson-Counterterrorism Section have been working to determine the cause of the Getty Fire. Using burn patterns, witness statements, and physical evidence, investigators have determined the preliminary cause was an accidental start at in the 1800 block of North Sepulveda Boulevard. The fire was likely caused by a tree branch that broke off during the high wind conditions and subsequently landed on nearby powerlines, which resulted in sparking and arcing that ignited nearby brush. The powerlines remain intact on the pole. There is no evidence of arson or an intentionally set fire and there is no evidence of a homeless encampment in the fire’s area of origin. Investigators are working to determine the ownership of the land occupied by the tree. Video and photographs of the origin area are below.
