Fire Captain I

Duties of a Fire Captain:

  • Responding the station complement and directing their activities at emergencies. When first on is responsible for all phases of command until properly relieved.
  • Assigning all station personnel to the companies within the station in accordance with Department policy.
  • Maintaining the station and assigned equipment and apparatus.
  • Planning, scheduling, and directing station fire prevention, pre-fire planning, and community relations.
  • Training and informing personnel within the command to assure effective operations; and requiring compliance with Department orders, directives and policies.
  • Maintaining records and forwarding necessary reports.

Requirements to test for Fire Captain:

* REQUIREMENTS SUBJECT TO CHANGE - REFER TO CURRENT JOB BULLETIN

  • Four years of full-time paid experience as a uniformed member of the City of Los Angeles Fire Department by time of appointment
    • Completion of 15 semester or 24 quarter units in Fire Science/Fire Protection Administration at an accredited college or university may be substituted for a maximum of six months of the required experience.

After minimum qualifications candidates will be scheduled for the following:

  • Test
    • 20% of the overall score
    • All material within bibliography is testable 
  • Job Simulation Exercises
    • 40% of the overall score
    • Examines various competencies that are required of a Fire Captain
  • Interview
    • 40% of the overall score 
    • Examines various competencies that are required of a Fire Captain
