Duties of an Arson Investigator

The primary duties of an Arson Investigator include the following:

  • Investigate fire scenes to determine origin and cause. This includes the documentation of the scene through photographs, diagrams, evidence collection, and other investigative techniques.

  • Interrogate and/or interview suspects and witnesses in relation to fire incidents, apprehend persons responsible for criminal fires, prepare investigation reports and search warrants, and file criminal complaints with the District Attorney’s Office or the City Attorney’s Office.

  • Assist prosecutors in preparing court cases, testify as an expert witness pertaining to fire origin and cause, and provide liaison with other departments, agencies and organizations.

  • Counsel juveniles and parents in relation to youth fire setting.

  • Assist Incident Commanders with fire origin and cause determination at fire scenes or through training.


Requirements to test for Arson Investigator

  • The selection process will consist of a written examination and interview

  • Members considered for selection must have a minimum of four years of LAFD Fire Suppression experience and be on full unrestricted duty.  Candidates who successfully complete the PGA process and are placed on a list will be subject to a thorough background investigation.
