Update Structure Fire; INC#1062; 04:25PM; 1119 W Hewitt St; http://bit.ly/2QOFbt6; San Fernando; No one was home in the structure (secondary residence to the rear of the property) that burned, however a functional smoke alarm in that living space is what alerted a neighbor, who called 9-1-1 and contributed to firefighters being able to arrive in time to save all surrounding structures. Sadly, there was one canine home at the time, who ultimately perished during the fire. An interior fire attack with coordinated ventilation took care of the hazard, and subsequent primary and secondary searches confirmed that no one was inside the structure in harm's way. Starbucks and Subway will be temporarily closed down, as an LAFD Hazardous Materials Squad responds with more sophisticated sensing equipment. A commercial cleaning operation in the underground parking levels (with equipment using a small gasoline-powered engine) has been identified as the culprit. The operation has been shut down and ventilation techniques will be used to restore healthy air to the affected areas, at which time businesses in the area can resume normal operations. Firefighters found a 25' x 75' commercial building fully involved with fire, and upgraded it to a Greater Alarm structure fire. Firefighters extinguished the flames relatively quickly for the size of the building and the amount of fire, which cause a partial building collapse. One firefighter was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. USAR on scene assessing structural integrity.
