Structure Fire; 02:35PM; 14129 W Hatteras St; https://goo.gl/maps/3VD995juh882; Van Nuys; DELAYED ALERT: 42 firefighters took only 12 minutes to fully extinguish a fire in the living room of a 1 story, single family dwelling. There were no injuries. The cause is "Electrical" malfunction which sparked the Christmas Tree, causing extensive damage to the living room and smoke damage throughout the home. Reports indicate a bystander (NFD) used a garden hose through the front window prior to LAFD arrival which helped keep the fire from spreading. There were no functioning smoke alarms in the home. Despite heavy fire, crews prevented it from extending and damaging any additional units in the large apartment complex (corrected to center hall as opposed to garden style). No injuries reported. Program (Smoke Alarm Field Education). Yesterday, 3 Jan 2017, a house fire resulted in a civilian injury in a home lacking working smoke alarms. LAFD resources and MySafe:LA members will canvass the immediate area, providing free smoke alarm installation and fire safety education to local residents.
