Firefighters ascended the interior stairwells to locate a contents fire on the 7th floor. Firefighters quickly developed "above-ground" hose lines up to the top floor to extinguish the flames in less than 30 minutes, and then ventilated the structure to facilitate smoke removal. While conducting a thorough search of the apartment, firefighters located a victim and determined death on scene. LAFD Arson is responding for the investigation. This will remain an active scene for the duration of the morning and commuters are advised to avoid the area of S Clarence St, south of East 4th St due to the presence of LAFD apparatus. Firefighters on the ground deployed hand lines to access and surround the fire while Air Ops conducted water drops. All forward progress stopped and the fire is contained. Crews will continue to conduct mop up operations with the fire held to less than 1/2 acre. No injuries reported. The 9-1-1 call was revived at 3:37AM.
