Odor Investigation; INC#0450; 08:52AM; 855 N Vermont Av; https://bit.ly/3WsGrT9; #EastHollywood; PRELIM: Odor investigation within one classroom at the two-story Science Tech Lab at Los Angeles City College, after water was flushed into a (sink?) drain. There was no visible smoke or vapor on LAFD arrival, and no escalating or off-site hazard has been identified. One college staff member (adult male Building Engineer) with no identified symptoms, who was in or near the involved classroom prior to LAFD arrival, has received an on-site medical evaluation by LAFD Paramedics. He remains at the scene. The involved classroom has been isolated, and all (undetermined number) building occupants were calmly evacuated, as LAFD responders, including hazardous materials specialists assess the situation and confer with college staff. COMPLETE - Hazardous Materials Investigation.; INC#0868; 02:30PM; 437 N Vermont Av; https://bit.ly/4cXCTzu; #EastHollywood; LAFD personnel, including hazardous materials specialists, secured the scene and abated hazards while awaiting the return of a civilian contractor who had formally serviced the leaking ~500 gallon stationary propane tank less than 24 hours prior. The leak - which reportedly involved a valve at or near the top of the tank, was readily secured by the contractor, without fire or injury. No ongoing hazard has been identified. All occupants of the two nearest (State office and American Career College) buildings have been allowed to return and/or end their shelter-in-place status. The closure of Vermont Avenue (northbound and southbound) between Rosewood Avenue and Oakwood Avenue is no longer in effect. Hazardous Materials Investigation; INC#0868; 01:02PM; 437 N Vermont Av; https://bit.ly/4cXCTzu; #EastHollywood; PRELIM: LAFD personnel, including hazardous materials specialists, are working to stop a vapor leak from a ~500 gallon stationary propane tank adjacent to a State office building. There is no fire. As a precaution, ~25 occupants of the the State office building have been calmly evacuated without any injury or illness noted. All occupants of the adjacent American Career College have been asked to shelter in place until the situation is resolved. #LATraffic: Full closure of Vermont Avenue (northbound and southbound) between Rosewood Avenue and Oakwood Avenue until the leak is secured and LAFD operations are complete. Unknown ETO. Travelers, expect congestion and plan an alternate route. Structure Fire - Now Out (Fatality); INC#0066; 01:18AM; 121 N Mathews St; https://bit.ly/46mPk5h; #BoyleHeights; Firefighters found a boarded-up one-story single-family residential structure with heavy smoke showing. Crews quickly made access and deployed hose lines inside the building. It took 34 firefighters 24 minutes (1:42am) to extinguish the flames. After eliminating the fire, crews performed a search of the interior and found one person deceased. Per protocol, LAFD Arson investigators have been summoned for a fire-cause investigation. KNOCKDOWN Structure Fire; INC#0125; 07:22AM; 749 S Kohler St; https://bit.ly/4bVBDeO; #Downtown; After a grueling fire fight through the early morning hours, firefighters have now suppressed all active flame related to this blaze. An outside storage area caught fire and spread to several nearby buildings. Two buildings were completely destroyed, and a total of five buildings were impacted by the fire. Firefighters used ladder pipes, large-diameter hand lines, and portable monitors to keep persistent water flow on the fire. Ultimately, it took over 170 firefighters 5 hours and 15 minutes to extinguish the flames. Crews will remain on scene for an extended period of time to uncover hot spots and continue to cool the smoldering material beneath the debris. Smoke will be seen in the area throughout the day. One firefighter sustained a knee injury and was transported to a local hospital in fair condition. No other injuries. Firefighters are using a combination of offensive and defensive tactics on the various burning buildings. Crews engaged in a defensive fire fight, setting up heavy streams from the exterior only, and knocked back the flames to keep them from spreading to adjacent structures. It took 46 firefighters 41 minutes to extinguish the flames. There were no reported injuries.
