Assistant Chief
Duties of a Assistant Chief
The primary responsibility of this assignment is to manage and administer the affairs of the Division on a given platoon, supervise and direct Battalion Commanders, and includes:

Responding to emergencies as dispatched and assuming command on scene as the first Assistant Chief until relieved.

Implementation of Bureau programs and policies.

Ensuring the efficiency and effectiveness of companies within their commands.

Evaluating alarm assignments and hydrant distribution.

Managing the fire prevention and pre-fire planning inspections on assigned platoon to assure enforcement of the Fire Code.

Supervising community and public relations activities.

Supervising the EMS District Captains within their Division.
Requirements to test for the position of Assistant Chief
* REQUIREMENTS SUBJECT TO CHANGE - REFER TO CURRENT JOB BULLETIN
Five years of full-time paid experience at the level of Fire Battalion Chief in the Los Angeles Fire Department as of December 5, 2014;
or
Completion of 25 years of sworn experience with the City of Los Angeles Fire Department as of December 5, 2014 with two years of full-time paid experience at the level of Fire Battalion Chief by December 27, 2020;
or
A Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university and two years of full-time paid experience as a Fire Battalion Chief in the Los Angeles Fire Department by December 27, 2020. Under the policy of rounding experience to the nearest full month, continuous service beginning on or before January 10, 2019 meets the requirement. Candidates cannot be appointed until the full experience requirement has been met. Completion of the LAFD Leadership Academy can be substituted for 3 months of the required experience.

Candidates will be required to respond to questions regarding their personal accomplishments in an essay format in a one-half day session
