Hazardous Materials Investigation; INC#1183; 05:29PM; 920 Bloom Wk; https://bit.ly/3LlJczT; #UniversityPark; USC staff has requested LAFD to investigate a pungent odor and unidentified liquid leak within a room on the first floor of the seven-story Seaver Science Center, which was calmly evacuated (unknown number of persons) prior to LAFD arrival. There were no alarm activations on LAFD arrival, and NO reports of any persons experiencing illness or injury. LAFD crews are working with USC Dept of Public Safety to assure that all persons in that multi-floor building have safely evacuated to the EAST. An LAFD HazMat team is now meeting with on-site USC scientists to methodically examine the scope and determine the nature of the odor and leak, and develop a strategic mitigation plan. Update Damage Correction - Major Emergency Structure Fire; INC#0289; 01:00PM; 9000 W Venice Bl; https://bit.ly/3LoI3aw; #Palms; As the investigation and clean-up continues at the scene of this morning's Major Emergency Structure Fire, it is now clear that direct fire damage was limited to *five* adjoining businesses, including (from east to west) a nail salon, smoke shop, martial arts studio, staffing agency, and pet boarding. Collateral smoke, heat and water damage affected the adjacent jewelry store to the east, and a restaurant at the west end of the building. All *seven* of those affected businesses were under one roof and shared a common attic. None of the businesses were equipped with optional fire sprinklers. The injured firefighter continues to receive medical assessment and treatment at an area hospital for his sudden illness. Traffic Advisory - Major Emergency Structure Fire; INC#0289; 12:00PM; 9000 W Venice Bl; https://bit.ly/3LoI3aw; #Palms; Travel on Venice Boulevard between Robertson Boulevard and Culver Boulevard will be limited to only one westbound lane this afternoon, as firefighters and investigators continue to work the scene of a major emergency structure fire that was extinguished this morning in the Palms area near the Culver City limits. The closure of lanes will continue until LAFD operations are complete, with an unknown duration. Significant traffic congestion and delay are being experienced in the immediate area. Fatality Vehicle Fire - Now Out; INC#0245; 04:34AM; 8221 N Vantage Av; https://bit.ly/3eXqC55; #SunValley; 24 Firefighters arrived quickly to find and extinguish (4:51 AM) a 25' travel trailer parked in a driveway area between two homes, well involved with fire. Firefighters held flames to the trailer, with heat damage to the eaves of both adjacent homes. The remains of an adult male were subsequently discovered within the charred remnants of the recreational vehicle. The fire's cause remains under active investigation. Knockdown - Major Emergency Structure Fire; INC#0289; 06:57AM; 9000 W Venice Bl; https://bit.ly/3LoI3aw; #Palms; 124 LAFD Firefighters took just 73 minutes to access, confine and fully extinguish fire that directly involved three businesses in a 50' x 400' one-story row of a dozen commercial occupancies. Heavy smoke impacted at least a half-dozen adjacent businesses, including a feline overnight boarding facility where several cats were rescued, but others sadly perished. Though there were no civilian injuries, one firefighter took ill during the intense firefight, and has been taken to an area hospital in fair condition for observation. The cause of the fire is under active investigation.
