Crews performed a coordinated vertical ventilation with interior fire attack to protect the adjacent units and achieve rapid extinguishment. No reported injuries. KNOCKDOWN Greater Alarm Structure Fire; INC#1179; 03:53PM; 531 N Soto St; https://bit.ly/48KdOq4; #BoyleHeights; Firefighters responded to a 7,528 square-foot two-story apartment building built in 1926, to find fire in one unit and the attic. Crews coordinated occupant evacuations, while setting up for simultaneous vertical ventilation (cutting holes in the roof for smoke to escape) and interior fire attack. One pediatric female (approx 7 years old) was transported after being exposed to smoke inside the building. Ultimately, it took 58 firefighters 29 minutes to extinguish the flames, keeping it from spreading into adjacent units. No other injuries. Crews are initiating a fire attack by ground and air. It took 47 firefighters 20 minutes surround the final one-acre burn footprint, stopping all forward progress. Crews will remain on scene to improve containment lines and cool all hot spots within the one-acre burn area ("mop up" operations). No reported injuries. One approximately 21-year-old male had minor injuries from jumping out of the house from the second floor (fair condition), and an approximately 50-year-old female sustained burns and smoke inhalation (critical condition). Both patients were transported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
