Update Greater Alarm Structure Fire 10/04/2018 INC#0277

Update Greater Alarm Structure Fire; INC#0277; 09:15AM; 720 W Washington Bl; internal:/; University Park; 133 LAFD Firefighters remain in extended defensive operations, fighting fire from outside the large vacant/abandoned two-story structure that served since 1924 as a mortuary and later several houses of worship; The building began having visible structural compromise shortly after firefighters arrived, and on further evaluation by LAFD Urban Search and Rescue specialists, as well as structural engineers with the City's Dept of Building & Safety, was red-tagged this morning as unfit and unsafe for human occupancy; The LAFD anticipates operations for several more hours, in battling stubborn and largely smoldering fire; Periodic escalations in smoke and fire though are anticipated; Motorists: expect congestion and delay in the area, and avoid Washington Blvd between Figueroa Street and Union Avenue until LAFD operations are complete; Unknown duration; Consider an alternate route; Detours readily available, Monitor traffic reports on news radio; Transit Users: Follow @MetroLAAlerts on Twitter for any related service information; FS 10; Batt 1; Central Bureau; Council District 1; - Brian Humphrey
