Van Nuys-

LAFD units responded to a fire in a Van Nuys coffee shop to find a fire out in the bathroom. Sadly, one person suffered extensive burns to his body and was taken in critical condition to a local hospital by paramedics.

Just after 8:00 AM on February 17, 2015, an approximately 60 year-old man entered a bathroom at a Starbucks located in the 15000 block of Sherman Way. Shortly thereafter, bystanders heard an explosive sound in the area and the patient staggered from the bathroom engulfed in flames and subsequently collapsed near the front entrance.

Firefighters rendered immediate medical aid and rapidly transported the patient to a local hospital in critical condition. Tragically, the burns appear to be self inflicted and cover 90% of his body.

We commend the patrons who safely assisted in extinguishing the flames prior to our arrival.

The LAFD Arson Section is actively investigating the incident and the surrounding circumstances.

UPDATE: The man succumbed to his burn injury at 6:30 PM, Feb 18, 2015, while at a local hospital.
